Only on our shores for 3 months of the year to breed, the Swift is an ancient and most amazing bird! Not landing from birth until approx. 3 years old they eat, sleep, drink, and mate on the wing. They adapted well to urbanisation, and took to nesting in crevices in buildings. Now, with modern building practices and abundant use of pesticides resulting in a lack of insects to eat, the Swift is vulnerable to local extinction.
Edward Mayer founded the Swift Conservation Group to make people aware of their plight. He has visited many countries across Europe to learn more about Swifts, find ways we can help them and now shares this information with others. Edward is an expert in this field and will explain how we can help our Swift population in Chiswick – and it is more than putting up nest boxes, so well worth coming along to listen.
